Little Maldron Mill

Torphins

true

Little Maldron Mill was a derelict water and horse driven mill building in Torphins, with dramatic views across the Dee valley towards Lochnagar. It had sat unused for almost sixty years until JAMstudio was appointed to design and manage its sympathetic conversion into a spectacular modern home, whilst retaining its traditional charm.

Scope

A build cost in the region of £450k included works to convert the mill building, construct the new garage and carry out landscaping work.

Environment

The mill lade has approximately 130,000 litres of water running through it each day, enough to fill a builders bucket in eight seconds!

Fact

Solar panels, fitted to the garage roof & connected to the hot water system, resulted in a 90% reduction in boiler use in the summer months.

Technical

A locally fabricated, fully functional mill wheel was commissioned to sit in the re-instated lade, providing a great historical feature.

Project feedback

This truly is a wonderful house, sleeping in the bedroom with the huge roof light windows is just like sleeping in the sky.
